King Ludwig's most magnificent palace should have been Herrenchiemsee. When he died it was far from finished. But even if it is not finished, it delights hundreds of thousands of guests every year who take one of the daily tours. The grand staircase leads to the state rooms on the upper floor, including the large mirror gallery . It becomes a concert hall during the Herrenchiemsee Festival. The splendid parade bedroom and the dining room with the famous “ table deck dich ” are among the other highlights of every guided tour of the palace.
Old and New Castle on Herrenchiemsee
Herrenchiemsee is probably the only island in the world with two castles . In addition to the “New Palace” of King Ludwig II, there is also the Augustinian Canons' Monastery, which is also known as the “Old Palace”. The king lived there during the construction work. The monastery building dates from the baroque period. Today it houses, among other things, the Chiemseemaler-Galerie . Anyone interested in German history should not miss the Constitution Museum. This is where the Basic Law of the Federal Republic of Germany came into being.

tip
Few people know that Herrenchiemsee is a beautiful hiking area . The loop around the island is nine kilometers long. The most beautiful vantage points are “Otto’s Ruh” and “Paul’s Ruh” . The names go back to an old noble family. Count Paul Maria Vogt von Hunolstein lived on the island from 1840 to 1870. He named one of the viewpoints after himself and the other after his son Otto.
