Demanding snowshoe tour to a summit cross with a breathtaking view.
Tour description:
The Dirnhofer family’s shuttle bus, which is subject to a charge, takes you from the Reit im Winkl hiking car park to the Hindenburghütte, the starting point of this beautiful snowshoe tour. The hike up to the Fellhorn is signposted.
Especially in the forest area, it is extremely important that you follow the green signs of the DAV alpine club so as not to disturb any animals. Initially you follow the trail for about 500 meters in the direction of the Hemmersuppenalm. The fantastic view of the northern Chiemgau Alps and Lake Chiemsee is worth every meter. At the first junction, follow trail no. 12 to the right in a southerly direction.
After another 500 meters along the trail, follow the green DAV alpine club signs into the forest and up to the Straubinger Haus. Initially it goes flat through the forest, but after a small clearing it goes uphill steeply. Good snowshoe technique is required here until the forest thins out again. You reach the pasture area around the Straubinger Haus, which is not managed in winter. Take your time for a short break at the small chapel and look out over the Kaiser Mountains, the Kitzbühler Alps and the striking mountains of the Chiemgau Alps, Geigelstein and Kampenwand.
Over a clearly visible, wide ridge, it then goes towards the summit. Following this ridge you reach the high plateau and cross the slope to the summit cross of the Fellhorn. In the last stretch up to the summit, a pronounced cornice falls sharply on the left edge to Tyrol. If visibility is poor, you should be careful here. Arrived at the summit cross you have one of the most beautiful views in the whole region. Be sure to note the mighty cornice around the summit! In good weather, the view extends to the high peaks of the Tauern chain, as well as across to the Winklmoos Steinplatte ski area. A real moment of pleasure on the mountain. Following the same path you return to the Hindenburghütte.
Note: The summer path via the forest road up to the Straubinger Haus is a bird sanctuary that is closed in winter.
