Far away from everyday life
The holiday feeling begins as soon as you set off with the Chiemsee boat trip, Herreninsel course. The steamers run all year round from Prien and Gstadt, in the summer months also from Übersee, Bernau, Seebruck and Chieming. During the trip across the often deep blue "Bavarian Sea" the view of the Chiemgau Alps in the south is a constant companion.
The Bavarian Fairy Tale King
From the pier, you can walk or (in summer) take a horse-drawn carriage to the beautifully situated Herrenchiemsee Palace. Built by the Bavarian fairytale king Ludwig II towards the end of the 19th century and never completed, Herrenchiemsee has been a magnet for visitors for over 100 years. During construction, King Ludwig II was inspired by the Palace of Versailles in France. The half-hour tours through the magnificent palace, which is open all year round, take you into the world of the last Bavarian king, his worship of the French Sun King and his early death. Exhibits from the christening gown to the death mask of the "Fairy Tale King" are in the adjacent King Ludwig Museum.
A round trip for all the senses
In the Old Castle, the former Herrenchiemsee monastery from the Baroque period, there is a picture gallery by the artist Julius Exter and other Chiemsee painters, as well as the Constitutional Museum and magnificent rooms from the monastic period. Also worth seeing are the trick fountains, the baroque castle park and the picturesque viewpoints of Ottos and Pauls Ruh, which can be explored on a walk around the island. It's ten kilometers around the island, the paths are signposted.
There are places to stop for refreshments directly at the castle (castle café) or on the steamer jetty (castle restaurant).
