From the Hochgernhaus you have a fantastic view to the south and an extreme view as far as the Grossglockner and the Zugspitze. The route to the Hochgern summit can either be mastered on the same day or after an overnight stay in the morning in order to be able to experience the first rays of sun and the sunrise.
But even while you are sitting on the terrace with a typical alpine snack and a wheat beer and waiting for the sun to go down, there is plenty to see: marmots romp around on the meadow behind the house , whistle their tunes and paragliders take off from the Hochgernhaus for their flight into the valley . There is usually a barbecue on the terrace every Friday and a barbecue buffet with a box seat in front of a great mountain backdrop (Loferer Steinbergen, the wild and tame Kaiser, Geigelstein massif, Kampenwand - behind them the Central Alps with the Großglockner to the Großvenediger).
Even in winter, the Hochgernhaus is a worthwhile destination for ski tourers and experienced winter hikers.
