The Frauenwörth monastery seems like a world of its own to arriving visitors. It is considered the heart of the Fraueninsel and is home to a Benedictine abbey in the middle of Lake Chiemsee. The nunnery, founded in 772, is the oldest in Germany today. You can see the white campanile from afar and with the ship you are getting closer and closer. You can feel the tranquility of this place spreading over you. Today the Frauenwörth monastery also functions as a conference hotel . Various kinds of seminars are held here throughout the year.
Tip
The entire complex is also particularly worth seeing in winter : the nativity scene originally came from Münster and dates back to 1627. Figures up to 80 cm high in ornate robes lend it a fairytale magic . A trip to the pre-Christmas island is also worthwhile before they are set up. The Christmas market that takes place there attracts thousands of visitors every year with its original mixture of art, culture and culinary delights across the lake.
In summer the best time to enjoy the peace and quiet is in the morning or evening hours .
