Herreninsel ship landing stage - St. Mary's Church - Augustinian monastery - Kreuzkapelle - Herrenchiemsee Palace - Otto's Ruh - Paul's Ruh - Herrenchiemsee Palace - Herreninsel ship landing stage
The easy hike begins at the ship landing stage on Herreninsel . After the waiting room (here is a large model of Herreninsel) and the visitor information center (here is the island ticket for the castle and museum), a staircase leads to the Marienkirche made of tuff stone , the former parish church of the island .
From here we continue to the former Augustinian monastery, the island's former monastery . Keep left there and into the monastery courtyard .
To the Cross Chapel and the Castle .
After leaving the courtyard through the archway, it goes through the former monastery inn and further to the right on a small avenue to the Cross Chapel on the northern tip of the island . A forest path leads along the shore to the castle canal . A wonderful view of the castle awaits you along the canal. From here you continue along the gardens in the direction of the castle .
Otto's rest and Paul's rest
Keep right at the castle . Turn into the hilly, varied forest landscape of the island at the Apollo basin. The path leads past a medieval rampart to the southern steep bank. The small pavilion, Otto's Ruh, can already be seen here. From here you have a wonderful view over the Chiemsee in the Chiemgau Alps. We continue through a magnificent beech forest. After the dilapidated water reservoir, keep right towards the lake. After a short walk, you come to the Pauls Ruh vantage point . Walk along the east bank to the driveway of Herrenchiemsee Palace . From here it takes about twenty minutes back to the jetty.
The names Ottos and Pauls Ruh go back to an old noble family. Count Paul Maria Vogt von Hunolstein owned the island of Herrenchiemsee from 1840 to 1870. He named one of the vantage points after himself and the other after his son Otto.
