Family hike through the idyllic Upper Alz Valley to the unique Alz ferry "Mina"
Tour description:
Baumburg - Marienkapelle - Wetterkreuz - Alz ferry - Laufenau bridge - Buchenwald chapel - Baumburg
Our starting point is the public car park in Baumburg . We walk up the hill and turn left through the archway to see the imposing Collegiate Church of St. Margareta of Baumburg Abbey. A small path leads around the church and you have a great view of Altenmarkt ad Alz. Back out through the archway, we turn left and hike along the "Weitfeld" to the Marienkapelle , in the middle of nature with a wonderful view. The Marienkapelle was built as a thank you for the safe return of Ludwig Dietl's father from the war.
Shortly after the chapel, a path leads to the right at the so-called "Wetterkreuz" (weather cross), hoping for protection from storms and hail, through a forest down the mountain. We follow the path on the left in the direction of Garsch, keep to the left in front of the house and follow the path to the Alz ferry . After we ring the bell, the ferryman or the ferrywoman comes and picks us up with the yaw cable ferry to take us to the other side (important: please call beforehand to inquire about the ferry times (more information on this at www.altenmarkt.de)). Crossing with the small ferry is a great experience, especially for children.
At the Roiter Wirt on the other side of the Alz, you can fortify yourself with coffee and cake or a cool beer and a snack before continuing along the road in the direction of Massing. In order to continue hiking along the Alz, we turn right onto the path. This leads us along the Alz right through the idyllic nature reserve "Upper Alztal" . This hike is particularly beautiful in summer, as the Alz invites you to swim again and again. After leaving the forest we turn left towards Thalham. In front of Thalham there are a few trees on the right and before that a trail leads us back to the Alz. Along the Alz, we then hike to the right over the Laufenauer bridge to the beautiful Laufenau lawn, which invites you to linger and sunbathe. Always following the path, we turn right at the end and go up the mountain. Always staying on the path, the road makes a left turn and then a right turn. Passing the Buchenwald chapel , a war memorial built in 1849, we return to our starting point , the car park in Baumburg. Due to the constant proximity to the Alz, the hike is a nice tour for families with children and even for prams.
