The Wendelstein Cave is the highest show cave in Germany . The cave was discovered in 1864 by a citizen of Bayrischzell and was then professionally explored in 1882. The cave system extends through the Wendelstein massif, so the publicly accessible Wendelstein Cave is only part of it. Due to its location at 1711m, it is well above today's river level, which means that the cave must have been formed before the Alps were folded.
The entrance to the cave is just behind the cog railway mountain station. There it goes down 82 steps through the artificial access tunnel. At the bottom, a path leads into the imposing cathedral , if you follow the path in the other direction you reach the natural cave entrance and the so-called cold trap , where there is snow all year round.
You can walk through the Wendelstein Cave independently . The visit lasts about three quarters of an hour . Inside, interactive stations tell interesting facts about the cave and the topics of geology and biology. Two further stations deal with psychology and philosophy. The average temperature in the Wendelstein Cave is around 3 Celsius , please think of a warmer layer of clothing.
