Marquarstein local history

Even if the history of Marquartstein goes back to the 10th century, the place is very young as a politically independent community. It was only created in 1938 by merging areas from Grassau, Schleching and Unterwössen. The actual history as a place begins in 1075 with the construction of Marquartstein Castle by Marquart II. From 1275 to 1803, the place played an important role as a central administrative unit in the Achental. The new railway line Übersee-Marquartstein from 1885 contributes to the economic and tourist development of the Achental.

Marquartstein personalities

The special flair of Marquartstein has always exerted a special attraction on artists and originals. The composer Richard Strauss (1864-1949) married the singer Pauline de Ahna in the St. Veit chapel in 1894. In the villa of his parents-in-law he often spent his summer holidays and wrote the operas "Salome" and "Feuersnot". The painter Anton Müller-Wischin (1865-1949), who was highly regarded at the time, was known as “Rosen-Müller” because of his flower still lifes. The Irish writer Jemima von Tautphoeus (1807-1893) and her husband Cajetan, Counselor of the Crown, saved the castle from decay in the mid-19th century with the proceeds from the sale of their novels.
