Übersee at Lake Chiemsee

Local History Overseas

In the Salzburg register of goods "Breves notitiae" Übersee was first mentioned in the year 788 as "ubse". For centuries the place belonged to the parish of Grassau, but in 1818 it became an independent parish and community. The construction of its own railway line in 1885 also brought tourism to the community. The painting school of the art professor Julius Exter in the Feldwies and the construction of the autobahn ensured a further boom as a tourist destination.

The painter and "prince of colors" Julius Exter (1863-1939) captured the scenic charms of Lake Chiemsee on canvas with expressive colors. His villa, the Exter-Kunsthaus, with studio, living quarters and garden in Übersee is absolutely worth seeing.
